One Room Challenge Fall 2020 Week 5 - Guest Bedroom Makeover

Hand-painted porcelain dresser drawer pulls with green fern design

Fabulous Flowers, Drawer Pulls, and More For This Guest Bedroom Makeover

Week 5 was the week the guest bedroom floors were sanded and refinished with the dark Jacobean stain from Minwax. This was scheduled knowing this was the only week the contractor had available. We're feeling a little behind as we will have to wait for Saturday's last coat of finish to cure before walking the floor and installing the furniture. This will bring us past the Week 6 deadline, and the photoshoot may have to be rescheduled. I will have to take advantage of the extra time provided by the One Room Challenge.

Project Progress - We Have Art!

On a happier note, this week’s progress came when Liz Roache’s Fabulous Flowers was ready for pickup. That was exciting news, and made the trip to the Boston Design Center to see Liz. The color of the flowers was perfect with the persimmon fabric chosen for throw pillows and the botanical floral fabric for the bench cushion. The pillow fabric also arrived and couldn’t be a more perfect match with the white floral persimmon accent chair going into the corner of the bedroom.

Another fun find was the green fern drawer pulls that also arrived this week. The painted gray drawer pulls on the dresser, and the two white night tables will be swapped out to white porcelain knobs with a painted fern leaf design and a center silver embellishment. The green is just the touch of color needed to make these pieces even more charming. The green is pulled from the area rug, and the lamps bring color up onto the furniture. These fun little baubles will add a custom element to this guest bedroom. I truly believe it is all about the little things that make a space come alive, the icing on the cake, sort of speak.

What’s to Come In Week 6 of The Guest Bedroom Makeover

The push to finish the room for Week 6 will bring a lot of anxiety and sewing. The absence of available time was scarce this week with client Thanksgiving holiday commitments lurking all around, leaving no time to hit the sewing machine. One pair of pleated drapes and five throw pillows are on the schedule to be completed for the guest bedroom makeover.

Kathy Bush of Badger Island Sewing

Floor refinishing, curing, and drying time, is a major piece of a final project and always needs to be considered when scheduling and installing. We are at the mercy of contractors. This always happens, whether a remodel or a new build when everyone is anxious to move in. The same feeling is happening now with this bedroom. Curing and waiting are steps that should not be taken for granted.

A pleasant surprise to lighten up my shadow of the Week Six deadline happened. The custom bench seat cushion was completed with botanical floral fabric from Carole Fabrics. I have to thank Kathy Bush from Badger Island Sewing for the beautiful job she did modifying the existing foam cushion to create a custom fit for the bench. This bench is a large element in the guest bedroom makeover.

Fingers crossed that some great miracle will happen and we can finish the guest bedroom makeover and meet the deadline of Week Six. On a lighter side, I feel confident that this bedroom will be a peaceful and calming sanctuary for guests to come and visit. They will have their own private quarters regardless of the current time-crunch dilemma.

Once again, I want to thank Linda Weinstein, the creator of the One Room Challenge, for creating this motivational design event.
